Respiratory quotients lower than 0.70 in ketogenic diets  [1980]

Abstract: Low respiratory quotients associated with ketogenic diets may be caused by increased retention and excretion of products not completely oxidized, such as ketone bodies. Another metabolic factor that can lower overall respiratory quotients is gluconeogenesis from amino acids. The formation of ketone bodies from fat consumes oxygen but does not produce carbon dioxide. When individuals are on a ketogenic diet or are starving, ketone bodies accumulate in the extracellular fluid during the initial phase, but are excreted.
