Impaired immunocompetence has been clearly associated with malnutrition, and a causal relationship has been established between infection and nutritional imbalance. Many complex, interacting mechanisms provide the body with protection against infection. Nutritional states, including severe undernutrition, moderate and marginal undernutrition, obesity or imbalances of single nutrients, influence these immunity-infection interactions, and vice versa. Once nutritional balance is recognized, appropriate diagnostic and intervention procedures should be initiated to prevent immunodeficiency. Conversely, immunocompetence should be one criterion in the nutritional assessment of hospitalized patients, individuals, and communities
