The National Agricultural Library is one of four national libraries of the United States, with locations in Beltsville, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Elderly beliefs and misbeliefs concerning food and nutrition are summarized and discussed. Topics include: sources of misleading nutrition information (particularly, specialty food stores, publications, "miracle" testimonials, and word-of-mouth folklore); the characteristics and misbeliefs of food fads and food quackery; the dangers of food and nutrition misinformation and the vulnerability of the elderly; nutrition facts and fallacies concerning a variety of popular themes (megavitamin therapy, natural vs. synthetic vitamins, a dozen different food supplements promoted for their proported nutrition and health benefits, medicinal herbs and teas, 6 popular weight reduction plans, proported disease cures); and misinformation about various foods and how the body metabolizes it. A list of 21 types of nutrition nonsense, and a brief discussion of the realities of advertising and of the concept of personal and public responsibility also are included. (wz)
