A technical overview summarizes and discusses recent reports concerning the relationship between lean body mass and body fat, comparing normal weight and obese subjects. Specific attention is given to: the estimation of lean body mass; predictions concerning dietary-induced weight changes; and changes in body composition during periods of energy deficiencies and surpluses. It is concluded that dietary changes induce changes in both lean body mass and in body fat
