This paper reviews and interprets the available literature and practical experience related to the activation of wood surfaces by oxidative pretreatment to improve adhesive bonding. Prior experiments on paper and wood surfaces are reviewed, along with commercial experience with activation of paper surfaces by corona, ozone, or flame pretreatment prior to lamination to extruded polymer film. An effort is made to explain various preoxidative effects, and to rank them in order of effectiveness. Oxidative removal of the low-energy surface film on wood, formed during storage by low molecular oleophilic materials such as waxes and fatty acids, is considered the most effective pretreatment. The most promising methods of activation are outlined for solid wood surfaces and for wood particles. Practical research needs, as well as pilot plant experiments, essential to the commercialization of activation processes, are proposed
