The National Agricultural Library is one of four national libraries of the United States, with locations in Beltsville, Maryland and Washington, D.C. It houses one of the world's largest and most accessible agricultural information collections and serves as the nexus for a national network of state land-grant and U.S. Department of Agriculture field libraries. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the United States. This article reviews the literature and includes a statewide survey of Michigan ophthalmologists and optometrists. The majority (75%) reported they currently recommend vitamin/mineral supplements for their patients with AMD. There is a cost/risk/benefit analysis as well as specific recommendations and implications for dietitians. Antioxidant nutrient supplementation (100% of the recommended dietary allowance) is recommended for those at risk for AMD
