Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, one of the most important corn pests, is widely spread in the United States, where it causes serious damages. The first appearance of the species in Europe was observed in 1992 nearby the Belgrade International Airport (Serbia). D. virgifera is now spreading from Serbia towards the neighbouring countries very fast and it has already reached Eastern Croatia, Southern Hungary and Western Romania. There is an high risk that the insect can reach Italy, where it would find suitable conditions for its development. Protection measures are suggested in order to avoid or at least to delay the introduction of the pest in Italy
