Gynura procumbens Merr. locally known as 'kacham akar' belongs to the family Compositae. The leaf of the species is edible as 'ulam'. The antidiabetic properties of the methanol extract of G. procumbens were assessed using oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in normal rats and insulin stimulatory activity using BRIN-BD11 cell lines. Hypoglycemic effect was observed with 1g/kg body weight of extract at 30 and 60 minutes after oral glucose administration. The insulin secreting activity was further evaluated using BRIN-BD11 cell lines. At a dose of 100mug/ml of the extract, the insulin secretion was significantly increased by 59.8; compared to the control. Cytotoxicity studies showed that the IC50 value of G procumbens on BRIN-BD11 cell lines was 300 mug/ml. These results suggested that the extract from the leaves of G. procumbens possess hypoglycemic activity in normal rats and stimulate insulin release in insulin secreting cell line with no cyto toxicity effect.
