The chemical composition and in vitro (pepsin/pancreatin) digestibility were determined in representative samples of foliage meal from six types of trees very common in mountains from western Cuba (Albizia falcataria, Albizia procera, Gliricidia sepium, Guazuma ulmifolia, Erythrina bertoroana and Samanea saman). The samples were obtained at random from uncultivated trees growing in the selected sites. Guazuma ulmifolia had the highest crude fibre content (36.2%), significantly different (P0.01) from that of Albizia procera (24.8%). Overall, the range observed for crude fibre content was high and between 24.8 and 36.2%. Foliage from Gliricidia sepium showed the highest N content (3.57%) whereas that from Samanea saman was the poorest (2.02%). There were significant differences (P0.05) amongst the examined tree foliages. Gliricidia sepium had the highest in vitro digestibility of DM, organic matter and N in the majority of cases (P0.01) as compared to the other tree foliages. Although in vitro N digestibility was high in Samanea saman and Erytrhrina bertoroana, in vitro DM digested were too low. The high crude fibre values found in the evaluated tree foliages may be a constraint for feeding pigs. It is recommended to conduct performance trials considering the most promising and available tree foliage sources for determining levels of inclusion of these foliage in diets for pigs.
