Chromosome pairing and the meiotic behaviour of univalents in the synaptic mutants of pearl millet, Pennisetum americanum (L) Leeke (Gramineae)

In an inbred line of Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke, segregation for both defective and total failure of chromosome pairing resulting in sterility was observed. The synaptic variants were designated as desynaptic and asynaptic based on the presence or absence of initial pairing. There was a correlation between lack of chromosome pairing at pachytene and the equational division of univalents at first anaphase. In the asynaptics univalents underwent equational division at first anaphase while in the desynaptics equational division of the univalents occurred at anaphase II.
