In order to assess the effects of inheritance of taurus genes on growth and carcass characteristics of Zebu cattle, the linear body measurements, body weights and dressing percentages of 141 Indian Zebu x Lanka (ZL) males were compared with those of 55 Taurus x ZL (TZ) males. It was observed that Taurus breeding in the crossbreds resulted in an increase in all the linear body measurements and weights. The mean +-s.e. of body weights of the two samples were ZL=143.5 +- 10.5 and TZL=178.1 +- 13.7 kg. Dressing percentage of TZL, however, was lesser than that of ZL both on age as well as on weight classification. Body weight was highly correlated with height at withers, chest girth and hip width in both groups
