In 1978, dry seeds of RD 9 were treated with 20 and 30 kilorads of gamma rays at the Office of the Thai Atomic Energy for Peace. Higher protein content is the main objective of this mutation breeding. All of the treated seeds were planted in the field at Bangkhen Rice Experiment Station, and were analysed for protein content by the use of Dye Binding Capacity method at the Rice Division. Ninety-two samples of M2 seeds showed higher protein content than the original variety RD 9 and they are in the range of 10-12 percent
