Analysis of experimental data in an NK fertiliser trial in an inland Malaysian soil, were responses to fertilisers are normally obtained, revealed no significant responses to nitrogen and declining responses to potassium with time over the entire eleven years of recording. As the plots were not isolated by trenches, the absence or diminution of responses could probably be attributed to unmanured palms having taken up nutrients from adjacent plots. Results of other investigations indicated that fertiliser placement was not critical, because comparable palm performances were recorded where fertilisers were applied over the weeded circles around at least 50% of the palms in alternate avenues between palm rows. The commercial implications of these findings are of considerable importance as costs and manpower requirement could be reduced if fertilisers were applied manually to alternate rows of palms or were broadcast mechanically over alternate avenue rows of palms
