Vitavax and Captan 50 at 0.2 and 0.3% concentration, respectively, were used for treating two cultivars of sunflower seeds, with high ratio of internally seed-born fungi and low germination percentage. Fungal isolation from seed tissues revealed that seed-born fungi were mainly found in seed coat and in low levels in the tissues of the embryo. Seeds treated with fungicides had low incidence of seed-born fungi. Captan 50 was effective against fungi located in seed coat tissues and promoted a higher seed germination in vitro, sand and field soil than untreated (control) and Vitavax treated seeds. Vitavax penetrated the seed coat tissues to the embryo and was effective in controlling the internally seed-born fungi of sunflower
