Two cultivars of two spacing-types of barley, "Numar" and "Arivat" were grown on silty clay soil in 1981-1982 and 1982-1983 in order to investigate the effect of the combination of 80-100-120 and 140 kg/ha seeding rates and 10,20 and 30 cm row spacing on the number of tillers/m2, percentage of fertile tillers, total dry matter accumulation and harvest index. Results showed that seeding 140 kg/ha in rows set at 10 cm apart had resulted in significant upward increase in number of tillers/m2 and percentage of fertile tillers. However, tillering percentage of Numar had similarly responded at 120 and 140 kg/ha seeding rates. Row spacing (10 cm) and seeding rate of 120 kg/ha combination had increased dry matter accumulation for both cultivars. Though Numar responded significantly better than Arivat varietal differences, different row spacing and seeding rates have no significant effect on harvest index
