In the Jaffna Peninsular pumping removes water from groundwater storage causing heads to decline and the salt water fresh water interface to rise. Salinity varies seasonally being lowest during the rainy season and highest in the dry season. Largely, because of lowfresh water heads in the aquifier and large amounts of withdrawals from wells, salt water intrusions have occured in several areas of the peninsular. The water table rises to peak in December. It is noted that more than 75 to 80 percent of the total area has a height from 0 to 2 meters above mean sea level. Rapid decline in water table and groundwater storage generally starts in January. In August the water table falls below mean sea level in about 50 percent of the total area and this is the lowest period for the year
