Ditelocentric (DT) lines of Chinese Spring (CS) are being introduced into the cytoplasms of Aegilops and Scale. The estimated transmission of telocentrics, from monotelodisomic CS with alien cytoplasms to the progeny plants, was 33.7% through female and 27.4% through male gametes. Data on the pollen and selfed seed fertilities of CSDT lines with Ae. ovata, Ae. speltoides, Ae. squarrosa and Ae. variabilis indicated that some chromosome arms of CS carry a major gene or genes for fertility against the alien cytoplasms. A number of modifier genes for fertility against the alien cytoplasms were located. A nucleo-cytoplasmic interaction in the gene expression for fertility such as the Rfo 1 gene located on chromosome arm 5DS is active to the cytoplasm of Ae. ovata but ineffective to that of Ae. speltoides, whereas the Ffs1 gene of 7B1 acts vice versa. This suggests the utility of ms mutants with the original T. aestivum cytoplasm for the hybrid wheat breeding systems by searching for an alien cytoplasm in which these ms mutants would be fertile
