The basic tenet of controlling houseflies is the improvement of environmental sanitation. Insecticide treatment whether applied as space spray or residual spray must be accompanied or preceded by adequate sanitational efforts to reduce or eliminate fly breeding sources. Observations on the diurnal rhythm and life history of houseflies are discussed. The efficacy of cotton cords (5 mm in diameter) treated with Diazinon 20 EC was demonstrated to suppress populations of caged flies. The insecticide-treated cords served as long-term suppressive measure. Potential natural enemies of flies observed in the garbage dumps include several species of insects, mites and toads. An integration of biological, chemical and physical principles are essential if control methods are to be intelligently understood and properly manipulated to man's advantage
