Blister beetle management in alfalfa to reduce livestock poisoning [pest insect; USA]
1982
Hoelscher, C.E.
Blister beetle toxicosis continues to be a cosmopolitan problem for livestock producers. Animal deaths have been most common in horses and poultry but poison symptoms have also been described for rabbits, rats, goats, sheep and beef cattle. Field sampling procedures before harvest have been developed to reduce the incidence of contaminated hay or feed. Alfalfa has been the most frequently infested crop with management strategies being developed to avoid or control blister beetle infestations. Laboratory tests confirmed a wide difference in cantharidin content of different blister beetle species in Texas
