Effect of chlorine sources and ammonium sulfate and the growth of coconut seedlings grown on four soil types (Philippines)

Four fertilizer namely: 30g (NH4)2SO4 + 35g KCl,60g (NH4)2SO4 + 70g KCl, 30g (NH4)2SO4 (NH4)2SO4 + 30g NaCl and 60g (NH4)2SO4+60g NaCl were tried on coconut seedlings belonging to Baybay tall variety grown on four most important "coconut soil" types (Palo clay loam, Maasin clay, Guinbala-on clay on Fara-on clay). Results showed that application of 30g (NH4)2SO4 + 30g NaCl produced taller seedlings with bigger girths and lesser degree of leaf spot/blight disease infection compared to unfertilized seedlings. Application of 30g NaCl was found to be more effective than 35g KCl and as effective as 70g KCl in reducing the disease incidence. Considering both the effectiveness and cost of NaCl, (NH4)2SO4 + NaCl at 30g each per seedling is recommended for coconut seedlings grown in soils in Leyte
