The influence of whey level and dry matter content in milk subsitute on grain and food utilization with young calves

This paper investigates possibilities and effects of partial substitution of dried sweet whey for powdered milk in feeding calves. Friesian calves were subject for this investigation. The following conclusions were drawn: 1)Nursing with substitutes for milk while feeding with liquid feed causes the decrease of the average daily gain from 668 to 630 and 623g. 2)Apparent digestibility of the nutritive matter in the meals, while feeding with liquid feed, showed a slightly declining tendency with the increased share of whey and concentration of dry matter in the liquid substitutes. 3)Absolute N retention in the 8th week had a declining tendency in calves nursed with substitutes with 10-20% of whey. At the same time, it was slightly lower in calves nursed with a higher concentration. 4)A little lower quality substitute with 20% of whey caused an increased consumption of starter. 5)Utilization of feed and nutritive matter in the period between 0 and 60 days was lower in calves fed with substitutes with 10 and 20% of whey and with higher concentration of dry matter. On the basis of the results obtained, it was concluded that introducing the compound of 10-20% of dried whey in the substitute for milk depresses the daily grain, digestibility of nutritive matter, retention of N and consumption of feed per unit of gain in the first 60 days of life. However, in the period of feeding with dry feed, calves from these groups consumed some more feed, having a better weight gain. Higher concentration of dry matter in the liquid substitute (15%) compared with the usual one (10%), had somewhat lower, but still satisfactory results.
