This paper presents the results of investigating the suitability of aquatoriums for controlled mussel breeding. The investigations were carried out in the river Krka estuary in 3 localities (the Vrulje cove, the Martinska cove, Skradin) at 2 m depth in the period June 1981 January 1982. The 25-45 mm size mussels collected at the hard ground at the eastern side of the island of Zlarin - Sibenik channel (Adriatic sea, SFRY), were used as hatching material. The condition factor value of the mussels in Skradin had a fall in July, compared with the value at experiment establishing, then was a rise in Aug (31.7). There was a new fall in Sept and then rise again in Oct (38.3). The highest value was noted in Nov - 47.1. There was a new fall in Dec (42.4), followed by high mortality. The experiment was over in Jan next year, due to 100% mortality. The condition factor value in the Vrulje cove varied between 28.2 (Aug) and 31.8 (June), to increase to 36.1. In Nov the value fell to 30.9 and Dec it reached its highest value of 51.1. The experiment was over in Jan next year, due to 100% mortality. The highest condition factor value of the mussels in the Martinska cove was noted in July in the first year of the experiment --57.8. The value fell in Aug and Sept (50.5 and 47.0), to rise to 49.0 in Oct. The value decreased again from Nov to Jan. The experiment was over in Feb next year, due to 100% mortality. It is concluded, regarding the condition factor value of the mussels, that the region around Sibenik is much better for commercial breeding than the farms existing so far.
