An experiment was conducted at Gazipur during April to July, 1982 to compare the effect of intercropping at varying levels of plant population and two levels of nitrogen. Monoculture plantings of maize (Var. Sadaf) consisted of 4.4x10000 plants/ha and groundnut (Var. DA-1) 33.3x10000 plants/ha were compared with intercropping at variable population of maize (4.4x10000, 3.3x10000, 2.2x10000 and 1.1x10000 plants/ha) and groundnut (33.3x10000, 24.9x10000, 16.6x10000 and 8.3x10000 plants/ha) and with two levels of nitrogen (30 and 120 kg N/ha). The highest total yield (3690 kg/ha) and net return (Tk. 8160/ha) was obtained from plant population level 4.4x10000 maize and 16.6x10000 groundnut plants/ha with 120 kg N/ha. The same combination also gave the highest LER (1.59), total energy (1242x10000 cal/ha) and protein yield (362 kg/ha)
