To investigate the bacterial population in coastal waters from Barcelona (Spain), 3H-thymidine incorporation, exoproteolytic activity and direct counts of bacteria by epifluorescence were determined in samples from nine sampling locations at two rivers, which are the main pollution focus of this coast. The three parameters showed high and very variable values along the studied period. Results are discussed in terms of correlation between observed bacterial population and the bacterial activities measured bt 3H-thymidine incorporation and exoproteolytic activity as well as the interaction of sea water and the rivers outfalls. These results suggest that a part of the observed bacteria are inactive and of external origin. However the important bacterial activities detected are well corresponded to the high content in organic carbon present in these surface water systems
