A study in source and sink control of nitrogen accumulation in wheat grains

Ears of the winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) variety Splendeur grown in the field for two years were reduced in size at various dates after anthesis by removing the apical halves. This treatment has no effect on dry weight of the remaining grains, but increased the weight of the rest of the shoot. In the first experiment the nitrogen content of the grain at maturity increased by 33% after removing the top spikelets. The effect was similar when the ear was halved in early or late growth. In the second experiment, where the grains in intact ears had higher nitrogen content than in the first, the removal of the top half of the ear did not increase the amount of nitrogen in the grain with any of the four levels of nitrogen fertilizer applied. In the first experiment the treatment of the ear did not influence the uptake of nitrogen by the shoot. In the second the shoots lost nitrogen from 5 days after anthesis up to maturity, the loss being greater with early treatment imposition
