Codounis, M. (Institute of Food Technology, Lykovryssi Attiki (Greece))
The removal of foreign and earthy substances from Chios mastic gum is performed by hand and increases the processing cost of the product. After succesful experiments for cleaning of Chios mastic gum from various extraneous matter an industrial cleaning apparatus was developed. This apparatus which consists basically of a melting tank and a centrifuging filter was installed in the factory of the "Union of the mastic gum producers" and is being operating successfully since August 1979. The extraneous matter is completely removed from the stored crude raw product and can be used for chewing gum manufacture. In this way product of old crops agglutinated and of inferiour quality can be upgraded and used for chewing gum manufacture
