Interaction effects of Sulfur and Phosphorus on yield, qualitative condition and nutrient content of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

In a greenhouse experiment the effect of five levels (0,5,10,20 and 40 ppm) of P and S respectively on bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L), dry matter, yield, crude protein ans S and P uptake was studied in a factorial combination. Plants were grown in pots and on a soil deficient both in P and S. It was found that the main effect of P and S on dry matter yield increase, was significant, while the SxP interaction effect was negative. Sulfur application increased dry matter S content but decreased its P content. On the contrary the effect of P on dry matter P and S content was opposite to that of sulfur. Also crude protein was increased by S while decreased by P application. The antagonistic effect of S and P on the uptake of each other, indicate the importance of balanced fertilization of these elements on the mineral nutrition of bean
