Daily changes in the circulating levels of progesterone and oestradiol-17 were studied in mature mares during 3 consecutive months using RIA. Progesterone was about 1 ng/ml during the follicular phase of the cycle till ovulation, increased on day 6 or 7 after ovulation to reach the peak levels of 7 to 10 ng/ml (mean 7.55 +- 0.39 S.E on seventh day of ovulation) and then gradually declined. The level of oestradiol steadily increased during follicular phase to reach the peak levels of 30 to 35 pg/ml on 1 or 2 days before ovulation (mean 31.76 +- 0.52 S.E. on a day before ovulation), dropped on the day of ovulation, followed by a gradual fall in the levels during the luteal phase of the cycle
