Characteristics of built-up poultry litter at different ages
1982
Azahan Ahmed, Engku | Lim, F.
Data on the characteristics of built-up poultry litters, used for rearing one, two and three crops of broilers, were presented. These included nutrient composition, pH, temperature, moisture content and microbial population. Nitrogen, crude protein, ash, calcium and phosphorus contents increased with increasing age of litter while the amount of crude fibre and gross energy decreased with increasing litter age. The content of either extract was constant. No significant differences were observed in temperature, pH, moisture content, total bacterial count and total mould and yeast counts of the different age litters. Comparison of these characteristics with those obtained from fresh faeces and wood shavings showed that as the litter aged its characteristics approached those of fresh fresh faeces.
