The nutritive value of silage made from Poa pratensis ssp. alpigena and Phleum pratense. 2. Lactating dairy cows fed silage made from first cut of Poa pratensis or Phleum pratense
1985
Hole, J.R. (Statens forskingsstasjon Vaagoenes, Bodoe (Norway))
During the years 1978-81 four feeding experiments with a total of 88 dairy cows were carried out at Bodoe elementary agricultural school, the neighbour farm of Vaagoenes Agricultural Research Station, in Bodoe. Silage made from the first cut of Poa pratensis ssp.alpigena (cv.'Holt') or Phleum pratense (cv.'Bodin') were offered individually and compared in the experiments. The content of FU (kg DM)-1 was higher in Poa than in Phleum silage in three out of four experiments. The milk yield was significantly (P0.05) lower for Poa fed cows in three out of four experiments. In all experiments the cows offered Poa had the highest weight losses. The intake of Poa dry matter was lower than that of Phleum in all experiments. The differences were significant (P0.01) in experiments 2 and 3, even on restricted feeding in these experiments.
