The nutritive value of silage made from Poa pratensis ssp. alpigena and Phleum pratense. 3. Growing bulls fed silage made from the regrowth of Poa pratensis or Phleum pratense [also deals with chemical composition]

During the years 1978-81 three feeding experiments with a total of 60 growing bulls were carried out at Vaagoenes Agricultural Station, Bodoe, in Northern Norway. Silage made from the regrowth of Poa pratensis ssp.alpigena (cv.'Holt') or Phleum pratense (cv.'Bodin'), fed individually and ad lib. were compared in the experiments. In addition, a comparision of 1.5 kg and 3.0 kg concentrate in the ration was made, giving a 2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments. A higher content of FU in Phleum silage were found in digestibility trials and in calculations based on growth performance. In all three experiments, the intake of silage given as kg DM, FU and gram DCP were highest for the bulls fed Phleum. An increase in concentrate offered decreased the intake of silage DM, but increased the FU consumption. The bulls fed Phleum silage grew faster and the carcasses attained better quality grades than those fed Poa. 3.0 kg of concentrates was preferable to 1.5 kg in terms of daily gain and carcass quality grade. The bulls fed Phleum also showed a lower feed expenditure given as FU (kg live weight gain)-1 than those fed Poa
