The mungbean, peanut and corn cropping pattern (MPC) was tested against corn-corn (farmers practice) at several lozations in Zamboanga del Sur during the two croppings of 1983. Financial returns to the farmers with the mungbean, peanut and corn pattern were more than twice of the corn-corn pattern. Evaluation in the 1984 season resulted in the first crop of mungbean yielding lower than the previous year, probably due to some seed source problems. In the second and third croppings, low yields were also attained because of rat damage to the peanuts and the late planting of corn in some area. However, optimum profits were still achieved because of crop price increase. The mungbean, peanut, and corn cropping pattern utilized reduced tillage practices which also minimized the potential for soil loss due to water erosion. The main adoption constraint to the three crop pattern is that the labour component for crop husbandry is increased beyond the means available to the farmer. Unless extra labour is employed, or improved labour savings methods of weed control are adapted, this technology will be restricted to a small portion of the farmers land holding
