In three experiments the growing steers have been fed with maize silage with various protein or urea supplements. With nylon bag technique the degree of dry matter and protein degradation has been determined. The mean values pH of the rumen content during feeding soybean and rapeseed meals, urea concentrates Walczan and Malwit or feed mixtures BW and B were 6,5 to 7,0. The highest concentration of volatile fatty acids within 2-4 hours after feeding the oil meals amounted 10-11 mmols/100 ml of rumen content. The increased level of soluble N were accompanied by more intensive synthesis of bacterial protein
