Tomato plants grown on nutritional cadmium containing medium exhibit reduced chlorophyll content. In isolated chloroplasts of cadmium treated plants the photosystem 2 activity and both photosystems activity are inhibited in about 60%. Photosystem 2 is not cadmium affected. The fine structure of chloroplasts is desintegrated similarly to senescence response. The principal symptoms of cadmium action is the occurrence of large plastoglobules and disorganization of lamellar strusture, mainly grana stacks. Transfer of cadmium treated plants into a medium with increased manganese level causes grana stacking and restoration of photosystem 2 activity
