Preliminary studies on two local varieties and three Hawaiian varieties of papaya [(Carica papaya L.) improvement for commercial purposes [in Thailand]]

Tosaphol Suneru
A study on some characters of two local papaya varieties (Sai Nam Peung, Wat Pleng) and three Hawaiian varieties (Sunrise Solo, Line 10 Solo and Kapoho Solo) was conducted. The local varieties were statistically different from foreign varieties in all characters studied. Some good characters were found in the fruits with longer shape such as: low-bearing, high yield and thick flesh. However, most characters of the local varieties were inferior to those of foreign varieties especially on the quality of fruit. A high percentage of carpellodic fruit and fruit weight over one kg had undesirable characters as well as small number of fruit per plant, low firmness and low percent total soluble solids. In all of the Hawaiian varieties, Sunrise Solo is the best variety for breeding purposes. Correlations among characters were different in all varieties except for the yield and numbers of fruit per plant; fruit weight and thickness of flesh, which had a highly positive correlation. Characters that had direct and indirect effect to yield were different in all varieties. Numbers of fruit per plant had the most direct effect on yield in all varieties except in Sunrise Solo which appeared to have the most direct effect of yield via fruit weight
