Lika is karst region situated in south-western Croatia (SFRY), surrounded by the mountains among which extend hollows with "poljes" and meadows, at the altitude of 450-800m. The most important domestic animal until the 20th century was sheep (Lika sheep). There were attempts of its breeding improvement. The attempt of crossing with Merino sheep failed even in 1948 and 1960. Lika sheep is today represented in Pramenka and Birka breeds. Breeding stallions of Arab breed were imported in the 18th century. Despite the use of machineries today, the number of horses is not in decrease. Until the end of the 19th century the primitive Busha cattle had been bred. During the World War II, the number of cattle decreased for 70%. After the war, the development of cattle breeding was continued by breeding improvement of Lika cattle with Brown Swiss Breed. In 1959 the application of artificial insemination of cows started. There were some positive results of cattle breeding improvement. There is very little information about swine breeding before the end of the 19th century. There is some information about swine breeding improvement at the beginning of the 20th century. After the World War II, swine breeding started to develop. Goats were bred in this region for centuries. The first written information about poultry breeding dates from 1896. There is also some information about apiculture in the 18th century. Veterinary medicine of this region is centuries old. In the 17th century, some works on this subject were published. Veterinary legislation existed in the 18th century. First veterinary stations were established in 1952 and 1953.
