Drying patterns of grey terrace soil [Bangladesh]
1986
Hamid, Abdul | Rahman, M.M. | Mohiuddin, Md.
Field experiments were conducted on Grey Terrace soil in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute farms during 1984 dry season. Changes in soil water content in the profile were monitored over a period of 40 days. Evaporation from an upper 10 cm layer of the profile differed considerably depending on soil surface conditions. Maximum evaporation recorded for unploughed bare soil while the lowest was for ploughed soil covered with straw mulch. Evaporation rates were almost identical for all three treatments when the soils were at or near saturation but the trend changed when evaporation was controlled mostly by hydraulic properties. Soil moisture drying curves characteristic to different surface conditions have been developed using soil moisture and environmental data over time. Shapes of the curves, particularly at the intermediate phase, depended heavily on the soil surface conditions
