Diallel analysis in wheat (Triticum aestivum)
1986
Hassan, L.
Diallel crosses involving five varieties of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were studied in F(1) generation. Variances for general combining ability (g.c.a.) were significant for the characters, viz. days to flower, number of ears per plant, number of kernels per ear and 100-grain weight. Variances for specific combining ability (s.c.a.) were significant for the characters, viz., number of ears per plant, ear length, number of kernels per ear 100-grain weight and grain yield per plant. Both additive and non-additive nature of gene action were observed for the characters, viz., number of ears per plant, ear length and grain yield per plant. The genetic system controlling the charcters, viz., days to flowering, number of kernels per ear and 100-grain weight was largely due to additive effect. Sonalika was a good general combiner, for earliness in maturity and 100-grain weight while Mexipak-65 was a good general combiner for number of kernels per ear. Cross Sonalika x Maxipak-65 exhibited a significant specific combining ability effect for grain yield per plant.
