Interspecific hybridization between mesta [Hibiscus sabdariffa L.] and kenaf through improved techniques
1986
Rahman, M.A. | Islam, A.S.
Since no strain has been released combining the desirable characters of Hibiscus cannabinus L. (kenaf) and H. sabdariffa L. (mesta), attempts were made to repeat the crosses in the above combination using improved techniques. Of the desirable characters which need to be combined, mention may be made of resistance of 'mesta' against root knot nematode (Meloidogyne species) and aphid and better quality of fibre 'kenaf.' Besides 'mesta' grows in poor and dry soil compared to 'kenaf.' Reciprocal crosses were made between the above two species using 500mg/1 of IBA in lanolin paste around the pedicel of pollinated flowers. Crosses succeeded in one direction using mesta as female. Percentage of fruit set was eight. The germination rate was 10%.
