Effect of type of roughage on milk yield and milk composition of Friesian dairy cows
1987
Georghiades, E. | Economides, S. | Hadjipanayiotou, M. (Agricultural Research Inst., Nicosia (Cyprus))
Thirty-eight Friesian dairy cows were paired at 42 days after calving on the basis of milk yield, live weight and lactation number, and were allocated to one of the following treatment diets: (a) cereal straw, alfalfa hay or green forage (alfalfa, berseem) and a concentrate mixture containing 16% crude protein, and (b) cereal straw, cereal hay and a concentrate mixture containing 18% crude protein. Milk yield and milk composition were not affected by the type of roughage fed, when the diets were balanced to the recommended levels of protein and energy. Dry matter, metabolizable energy and crude protein consumed per kg of milk produced, and the rate of decline of milk yield during the 105-day experimental period were similar for the two diets
