On 'H 777' upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum Linn.) the bolls formed from the last week of July to the first week of November harboured diapausing larvae of pink boll-worm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders). Bolls formed up to August contained less diapausing larvae (6-20%) than later-formed bolls (26-90%), but the emergence of moths was more (12-50%) from the earlier-formed bolls than from the later-formed ones (1-10%). More than 98% diapausing larvae were recorded in double-seeded bolls. About 57% had only 1 diapausing larva. Diapausing larvae were observed as early as 5 August in 1982 and 30 July in 1983, indicating that some populations of the pink bollworm probably have only 1 generation
