Cane samples of two cultivars of Actinidia chinensis and A. arguta were taken with one month interval from Dec. 20 to Mar. 20. Contents of carbohydrates, fatty acids and abscisic acid were assessed to clarify the relationship between chemical compound contents and freezing tolerance. The high soluble carbohydrate contents in the bark increased freezing tolerance. The high contents of sugar, particularly fructose and glucose, were found to be related with increased freezing tolerance. The total nitrogen content seemed to be inversely related with the freezing tolerance. The high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids and the high level of abscisic acid in plants also related to freezing tolerance positively
