Plant material of the species Phleum pratense, Festuca pratensis, Poa trivialis, Ranunculus acris, Ranunculus repens, Rumex acetosa and Rumex longifolius were harvested at different stages, in eight successive years. The plants were analysed for chemical contents and in vitro digestibility. Weed species had a higher mineral content than grass species. R. longifolius and R.repens showed particularly high values of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. With the exception of R. acetosa, the weed had a higher sugar content than the grasses. The percentage of crude protein was highest in R. longifolius, R. acetosa and R. repens, and weed species had the lowest crude fibre content. R. repens, had particularly high digestibility compared with R. longifolius
