Sixty farmers, with more than 5 years maize farming experience were surveyed in Claveria, Misamis Oriental as to their perception of pests problems and their control practices. Rat, maize borer, seedling maggot and armyworms were mentioned as major pests. The farmers practiced selection of pest (borer and earworm) resistant varieties (60%), e.g. Tinigib, Kasiba, Marianas, and Calimpos. Cultural methods used include sanitation against rats (12%), field rituals against worms or rats (12%), specific planting dates against lepidopteran pests (10%), smudging against most worms (8%) and spray against all pests (7%). Ninety percent of the farmers recognized the natural enemies of insect pests, most of the farmers (82%) suggested some practices which enhance their predatory activities. Very few farmers used insecticide for seed treatment; none sprayed to a standing maize crop
