Effects of variety of rice and level of nitrogen fertilization on the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of straw [Philippines]

Results showed that organic matter, crude protein, mutual-detergent fiber and cellulose contents and in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibilities were influenced by rice varieties. Increasing levels of nitrogen fertilization tended to increase the crude protein content of rice straw. Neutral-detergent fiber contents were lower and in vitro digestibilities higher in wet-season rice straws. No significant effects on lignin and silica were observed. Among the four rice varieties, IR 36 was better in nutrient quality than any of the 3 other varieties
