Analysis of information obtained from the F2 of the cross combinations revealed that Kochihibiki carried the major recessive gene for Dee-geoo-woo-gen for short stature. P-3 Basmati Dwarf probably had the sd1 for short stature and few positive modifier genes. Jagannath might possess the sd1, but with positive modifier genes. Sekarmandi might have the sd1 gene and other genes for tallness. The analysis of the F2 data for panicle, leaf blade and number of tillers per single-plant-hill suggested that the inheritance mode of these characters could not be considered as monogenic. Simple correlation analysis for the segregating population showed that there were highly significant positive correlation between plant height and culm length, plant height and panicle length, plant height and leaf blade length. No correlation was detected between plant height and number of tillers per single-plant-hill in the F2 population. Variation of plant characters of the 23 semidwarf varieties showed that the first internode gave the least variation while the third internode was most variable, indicating that semidwarf genes affected more the lower internodes. It was found that most of the vegetative characters were highly positively correlated to each other; however, grain characters were not correlated with any of the vegetative characters. No correlation was found to exist between the upper elongated internodes and number of leaves per main culm and between the upper elongated internodes and number of days to heading. It was shown that short culmed varieties with few elongated internodes belong to the groups with upper internode elongation type, while varieties with tall culm and internodes belong to the lower internode elongation type
