The extent and significance of seed variation on different cotton (Gossypium spp.) varieties [Philippines]

The four varieties, namely: UPL-C1; UPL-C2, Deltapine 16a and Deltapine 16b varied significantly in the proportion of the three seed sizes (large, medium and small), percentages of high and low density seeds, fuzz content, seed index as well as kernel and hull contents. UPL-C1 was found to have the highest proportion of large seeds with high seed index. The size and density of seeds exerted considerable influence on some seed characters. Large seeds gave higher seed index, fuzz content, kernel content, germination as well as seed vigor index as compared with the medium and small seeds. Generally, the chemical components of seeds measured in terms of moisture, ash, fat, protein, crude fiber and carbohydrate contents are not related to seed sizes and seed densities, hence not good determinants for good seed quality. The first and second primings produced higher proportion of large seeds compared with the third priming. Moreover, high germinability characterized the seeds from the first and second primings when compared with the third priming. Large seeds produced significantly taller plants with higher total leaf area. UPL-C2 produced the highest number of bolls at an average of 7.3 bolls per plant but with the least number of seeds per boll. Under field conditions, seed variability (size and density) appears to have very little influence on the number of bolls, boll weight, seeds per boll and seed-cotton yield
