Colchicine effects on seed germination and seedling development of watermelon were studied. Seed germination was significantly promoted by treatment with colchicine at concentrations of 0.0035 to 0.2%. The meristematic and newly-differentiated tissues of the primary organs of the seedlings grown from treated seeds were essentially similar to those of the control seedlings. Colchicine effects on cytodifferentiation was manifested by the extensive vascularization in the first leaf and hypocotyl. Root-shoot transition follows Type A of Eames and MacDaniels (1947). It involves the forking and lateral swinging of the four xylem strands, fusion with the phloem and the splitting of the vascular strands. The number of bundles is increased from four in the root to six in the hypocotyl
