Magnesium oxide was applied in cows in a weekly dose of 20 g throughout the year. Simultaneously grasslands were fertilized with a magnesium lime. A rise in magnesium blood content was associated with a decrease in the number of puerperal endometritis cases from 16.9 to 11.0%, reduction in the frequency of placental retention from 12.0 to 6.36% and shortening the period from calving to the first insemination by 8 days. As a consequence the mean interpregancy period was reduced by 20 days
