Systematic application of farmyard manure over many years resulted in a significant rise of organic matter even in light soils. The increased build up of organic matter had a positive effect on many chemical and physical properties of the soil including pH and content of basic nutrients. Organic fertilization had also a positive effect on soil microorganisms and at the same time organic substances incorporated in the soil had an inhibitory effect on some pathogenic fungi
